Research projects:

Maria de Fatima Andrade is an Associate Professor at the Atmospheric Sciences Department of the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences (IAG) at University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil. She got a PhD in Physics at the Physics Institute at USP working with atmospheric aerosols analyzed by nuclear techniques in 1993, under the guidance of Prof. Celso Orsini. In 1994 she stayed at Caltech in Pasadena starting working with photochemical modeling. She coordinates a group dedicated to air quality modeling and measurements of aerosols and analysis. She has finished the supervision of master and PhD students and coordinate research projects in the area.

Research Interests:

Her research interests are atmospheric modeling, aerosols measurements and characterization, climate impacts of mega-cities and aerosol-cloud-climate interactions.

New projects:

The projects are related to the atmospheric chemistry of aerosols and its impact on climate and health. The projects involve many institutions from São Paulo State and Brazil. Link to the site of the group www.lapat.iag.usp.br

  1. NUANCE: Narrowing the Uncertainties on Aerosol aNd Climate changEs in Sao Paulo State – NUANCE-SPS
A collaborative research involving many groups from the Sao Paulo State. The theme of the project can be summarized as the implementation of a modeling system representing the chemical-physical process in the troposphere and the health impacts at the urban scale.  The megacity of São Paulo will be an example of integrated approach regarding evaluating of the impact of the climate change on it air quality. In this project, MASP will be an observatory of the climate, with special attention to the variation of the meteorological characteristics due to the climate change. Coordination: Prof. Maria de Fatima Andrade. Funding FAPESP: Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo.
  2. “Fine particles: Mass and number size distribution”. Coordination: Prof. Maria de Fatima Andrade, funding from National Research Council (CNPq).
  3. Participation in the project“ Toxicity of particulate matter: clinical and experimental research (Funding from National Research Council: Edital 18/2006 MCT CNPq / CT Saúde)”. Coordination: Prof. Paulo Saldiva, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo
  4. “Dispersion of pollutants in Cubatão: formation and transport of photochemical oxidants and particulate matter”
It is a Project to study the Wind circulation in a very industrial area close to the sea and surrounded by high mountains in the southeast of São Paulo State. The analysis of the particulate matter composition is being performed. Coordination: Prof. Maria de Fatima Andrade
  5. Emission Factors obtained through road tunnel measurements. Coordination: Prof. Maria de Fatima Andrade. Funding from CNPq (National Council for Research).
  6. Participation in the “Emisiones Sudamericanas, Megaciudades Y Clima (SAEMC, South American Emissions, Megacities and Climate)”, coordinated by Dr. Laura Gallardo.
  7. Member of the Committee of the “National institute for ambiental risk analysis: Instituto Nacional De Análise Integrada Do Risco Ambiental (Edital 15/2008 MCT CNPQ). Coordination of Prof. Paulo Saldiva, Faculty of Medical School USP. Link: www.inaira.org
